Many Parkaris are effectively enslaved as landless labourers working for wealthy feudal landowners. They do all the field work in exchange for only a half or even a quarter of the crop.

Landowners often do not pay workers their fair share. So most labourers are in debt to the landowner, and cannot leave until they have paid off their debts.

They are illiterate and at the mercy of their landowner. If the landowner fails to pay them or abducts their wife or daughter, they have no recourse but to run away. Runaway labourers are usually caught and returned.

The only way out of this "bonded labour" is to own land. £ 3000 would buy one acre to settle 8 families.
